Comparing theories of Sequence of Tense

Abstract

As is well known, some past-under-past sentences have a so-called "simultaneous" reading. We compare a theory that explains this by positing a designated Sequence of Tense LF with one that does not, arguing in favor of the former, despite the relative elegance of the latter. The comparison also sheds some light on the status of 'de re' approaches to embedded tense.
